An Interview with Peter Williamson

Peter Williamson discusses his experience at the 2019 Brightspot Unified Challenge and how his life has been in the year since with Special Olympics golfer and fellow competitor, Matthew Gang.

Matthew Gang: Hi Peter. What was your best memory at the golf course?

Peter Williamson: I think it was just meeting people from the different programs that are so passionate about the game and then also using the game to help others.

Williamson: I got to play with a few individuals that were really impressive. And my favorite part of going out and playing golf is meeting new people.

Gang: I totally agree with you on this one.

Williamson: But I really enjoyed Creighton Farms, I had not been out there before. It's a beautiful venue and a really fun golf course. Whenever you get to play one of the better courses in an area like DC and it's a special experience

Gang: Yeah, it is.

Peter and Matthew Discuss the 2019 Brightspot Unified Challenge

Williamson: Do have a favorite place to go in DC?

Gang: My favorite place is the monuments.

Williamson: Down on the National Mall and you can see a lot of the monuments that are there. I really enjoy getting into the public spaces as well. There's a really great park that runs down the center of the city called Rock Creek Park and it's just a really great space to hang out and walk.

Gang: How has your year been since we saw you last?

Williamson: Certainly not as expected with the quarantine and pandemic. It has changed a lot of what I've been kind of focused on. I’m hoping that everyone is staying safe and I've been trying to help a lot of people from home with the work that I do.

Gang: Can you tell me anything cool that happened to you since last year?

Williamson: Anything cool that happened while I'm turning 30 on Thursday, but other than that not much in the last six months. Unfortunately, but late last year I started working on a really great project and hopefully it will allow me to get out to the golf course more because It's all about building relationships. And I think one of the things that I've learned is that I need to take a step back from the computer from time to time.

I just went out on Saturday morning after I woke up at four to be the first tee time at a golf course. And it was really great. I haven't done that since I was a little kid, getting up super early to beat everyone to the golf course and to be able to play.

Williamson: I used to do it be a professional golfer, but now I am stuck in front of a screen all day so anytime I can get outside is a plus.

Gang: How is your golf game. Do you have a great golf story to tell?

Williamson: The fact that I've actually played one hole of golf is a good story. But my golf game is pretty good considering I haven't practiced much. I just went out on Saturday morning after I woke up at four to be the first tee time at a golf course. And it was really great. I haven't done that since I was a little kid, getting up super early to beat everyone to the golf course and to be able to play.

Gang: Exactly. I play with my dad a lot, so that's fantastic. Whenever you get to play with your family.

Williamson: That's wonderful. What's your favorite golf story?

Gang: Good question. Every par-three and when I come close and I am going to birdie!

Gang: I wish the virus will be over soon maybe by November or December.

Williamson: Me too, at least to a point where we feel like we're safe enough to get to see the other.
